Is Christianity secondary to God's Love for humanity?

I walked through the valley of death and God walked by my side and I think perhaps as the poem footprints says, was even carrying me at times, though I was too ill to know. However, in all I experienced not once was it mentioned that I should accept Jesus Christ or become a christian or even Christened. Why?
